A depiction of the Apparition inspired by religious stained-glass windows

The illustration recalls the Apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Saint Bernadette Soubirous in 1858 at the Grotto of Massabielle. It thus depicts one of the events that gave rise to the devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes and to the development of Lourdes as a major Marian pilgrimage site.

The stained-glass effect is characterised by its colours and its inspiration drawn from traditional religious art. It lends this small frame a decorative quality whilst highlighting the scene of the Apparition.
