Water collected at the Sanctuary each morning

Our shops have stood in Lourdes since 1914, on the boulevard leading to the Sanctuary. Each morning we collect the water at the Sanctuary, at the fountains by the Grotto of Massabielle, and fill the bottles by hand.

The water is given freely by the Sanctuary: it is neither bought nor sold. Your payment covers the containers, the filling and the shipping.

Why five bottles rather than one

Because Lourdes water is meant to be given away. Our customers say so themselves: they keep one and hand out the rest. A sister, a neighbour, a colleague going through something hard, someone in hospital, the people met along a pilgrimage.

The 80 ml size has much to do with it: small enough for a bag or a padded envelope, generous enough to last months of occasional use. It is also the size pilgrimage groups choose on returning from Lourdes, to bring something back to those who could not come.

Can these bottles be blessed?

Several of our customers have them blessed before giving them away. Nothing stands in the way: Lourdes water is not holy water in the liturgical sense — it is spring water which the faithful associate with grace because of the healings reported since the apparitions, seventy of which the Church has recognised as miraculous.

A priest may therefore bless it, as he would any devotional object. Nor is it required: the water accompanies prayer without ever taking its place.

Which size to choose from our range

If you share often, the set of four 100 ml bottles gives a little more in each. For personal use, turn to the 75 ml bottle or the Virgin Mary shaped bottle, which stays on as a devotional object once emptied.

To bless a home or supply a parish, you will want the 250 ml bottle or the one-litre bottle. And for wider distribution still, the cross filled with Lourdes water on a cord can be given singly for very little. The whole range sits in the Lourdes water category.
