The family and childhood of Saint Bernadette
Bernadette Soubirous was born on 7 January 1844 in Lourdes, into a modest family of millers. She was the eldest of the children of François Soubirous and Louise Castérot, with siblings Toinette, Jean-Marie, Justin and Bernard-Pierre. Bernadette had no descendants: having entered religious life, she had no children, and her line continues through her brothers and sisters. The life of Bernadette after the apparitions
After the apparitions of 1858, Bernadette left Lourdes and entered the Sisters of Charity of Nevers, where she led a humble and quiet life until her death on 16 April 1879. Her body, found intact during several exhumations, now rests in a shrine at Nevers: it is spoken of as an "incorrupt body". She was canonised in 1933.
