The Saint Benedict medal

Founder of Western monasticism in the sixth century, Saint Benedict is called upon in spiritual struggle. His medal is among the oldest sacramentals of the Church: the current pattern, the Jubilee medal, was struck in 1880 for the 1,400th anniversary of his birth.

What the inscriptions say

The front shows Saint Benedict holding the cross in one hand and his rule in the other, with the invocation Eius in obitu nostro praesentia muniamur: "At the hour of our death may we be protected by his presence".

The back carries the cross ringed with letters, the initials of Latin prayers: C S P B (the cross of the holy father Benedict) around the cross; C S S M L (may the holy cross be my light) and N D S M D (let not the dragon be my guide) on the arms; and around the edge V R S N S M V - S M Q L I V B (Begone Satan, suggest not to me vain things; what you offer is evil, drink your own poison).

A sacramental, not a charm

The Saint Benedict medal is an object of devotion, not a talisman. It works through the faith of the wearer: it supports prayer and the rejection of evil, it does not exert a power of its own. If it is a gift received by post, it is customary to have it blessed by a priest before wearing it; for this medal a specific blessing rite exists.
