The Grotto of Lourdes, site of the eighteen apparitions of the Virgin Mary to Bernadette Soubirous between 11th February and 16th July 1858, very quickly became a place of pilgrimage.
What surprises the pilgrim on arrival in Lourdes is the large number of stretchers, wheelchairs and carers seen in the crowd.
