To protect couples or your family, you may have been advised to pray to Mary who unties knots. Where does this strange name come from? And why is it called Mary Undoer of Knots? How do we pray to Mary Undoer of Knots and what benefits can she bring to our daily lives?

The origins of Mary Undoer of Knots

The devotion to Mary Undoer of Knots has a very specific origin. It began in 1615 with the story of Wolfgang and Sophie von Langenmantel, who, despite a recent marriage, had frequent quarrels to the point of considering divorce. In the 1980s, Jorge Maria Bergoglio, the future Pope Francis, rediscovered this cult. He was touched by the topicality of this episode in his life. Gradually, he spread the prayer to Mary who loosens knots in South America and then all over the world. Let us explore the story of the prayer to Mary who untied the knots, full of surprising episodes and twists.

A miracle from Mary for a couple on the brink of breaking up

In 1615, a Catholic couple, Wolfgang Langenmantel and Sophie Imhoff, had been married for three years. Many crises and disputes were tearing the couple's daily life apart. Both are devout Catholics, and the idea of divorce is repugnant to them. In a final attempt to make things better, Wolfgang goes to see Father Jakob Rem.

This Austrian Jesuit is known for his great devotion and wisdom. About ten years earlier, kneeling in front of the painting of Our Lady of the Snows, Our Lady had appeared to him and asked to be invoked under the title Maria ter admirabilis (Mary three times admirable).

Accepting Wolfgang's request and holding the couple's wedding ribbon in his hand, Jakob goes to pray before the image of Our Lady. He implores Mary to bring peace to the couple. Then he sees the knots unravel one by one and the ribbon becomes dazzling and shiny, returning to the smooth and white appearance it had on the wedding day.

In the following days, the couple regained their serenity and reconciled. The couple lived happily and peacefully for the rest of their lives.

The image of Mary undoing knots

A few years later, the couple's grandson, Jerome Ambrose von Langenmantel, canon of Augsburg, commissioned the artist Johann Melchior Schmidtner to paint a picture of Mary untying the knots.

Completed in 1700, the work is impressive: Mary is bent over, focused on her task: she holds the ribbon in her hands and unties it. An angel hands her the knotted ribbon, while another receives the smooth, untangled ribbon. The symbols depicted around Mary make the representation even more striking: Mary is dressed in a blue cloak. At her feet is the moon and twelve stars representing a crown. The serpent from Genesis, representing evil, is trampled upon. A dove representing the Holy Spirit is depicted in the upper part of the painting.

For several centuries, the devotion to Mary undoing knots remained a local cult in Southern Germany.

The future Pope Francis discovers the painting of Mary untying knots

In the 1980s, Jorge Maria Bergoglio, the future Pope Francis, who was still a simple Jesuit, was overwhelmed by this image of Our Lady Mary bending over men's problems: he found symbolism in it.

- This attentive and gentle Madonna pays attention to people's lives: she is a resource for us in our daily lives and can help us solve our problems.

- For Pope Francis, knots are a way of expressing the difficulties of families, men and women in their daily lives.

- The fact that knots are untied by divine intervention is a testimony to the mercy of God the father for the people of Christ.

The future pope brought reproductions of the painting Mary Untying the Knots to Argentina and began distributing them to his entourage. He then had a large painting installed in the chapel of the university where he was rector in Buenos Aires. Gradually, he made the painting and the cult of Mary untying knots known in Argentina, giving rise to a whole movement of popular piety. This piety eventually spread throughout Latin America.

Now pope since 13 March 2013, the pontiff continues to spread the cult of Mary Untying the Knots around the world.

Pope Francis' prayers to Mary who unties knots

For each knot, Pope Francis suggests a prayer intention around a theme:

- the first knot to untie loneliness and indifference,

- the second knot to untie unemployment, especially youth and female unemployment,

- the third knot to untie is that of domestic violence,

- The fourth knot is that of human progress and scientific research so that their progress is accessible to all, especially the poorest and weakest,

- Finally, the fifth knot is that of pastoral care, so that every church can regain momentum in its evangelising mission.
