The Grotto of Lourdes, a Place of Pilgrimage

In 1858, on 11 February to be exact, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared for the first time to the young Bernadette Soubirous. This poor peasant girl from a precarious background had been chosen by the Virgin Mary to pass on the good word to Catholic Christians. During these apparitions, the Virgin Mary asked Bernadette to build a chapel and to make Lourdes a place of procession and pilgrimage. The Catholic Church followed her instructions and built the first church. Then, as the number of pilgrims grew, a cathedral was built. Next came a basilica. Then another, and another church were built to form the extraordinary place of pilgrimage that it is today. If you've ever been to Lourdes, you'll be familiar with the grandeur of this shrine and its belief in the apparitions of the Virgin Mary.

The Grotto of Lourdes

The Grotto of Lourdes is more than just a place of worship. It is a sanctuary of prayer, trust, peace, respect and silence. It was here that the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette in 1858, making this grotto a sacred place for pilgrims from all over the world. Whether you choose to meditate in silence, pray the rosary, attend mass or simply sit and feel God's presence, the Grotto is a place where you can leave your thoughts, sufferings and worries, as well as your joys and thanks. It's a place of reflection and connection with the divine.

The water of Lourdes

At Lourdes, water has a special significance. It was here that the Virgin Mary told Saint Bernadette where to dig to find the spring. Since then, millions of pilgrims have come to Lourdes to drink from the fountain and to take some home with them. The water of Lourdes is not just ordinary water, it is a symbol of faith and healing. Whether you choose to make the "water gesture" at the pools, drink and wash your face with water from the spring at the eighteen fountains, or even fill a container to take home, the water of Lourdes is a reminder of God's presence and his love for us.

The Lourdes candles

At Lourdes, candles are lit to entrust all our intentions to the Virgin Mary. The flame that burns prolongs our prayer, even after we have left. Whether it's for yourself, your family, your friends or those who have asked you to pray for them, lighting a candle at Lourdes is a gesture of faith and hope. You can light candles at the Chapelles de Lumière, opposite the Grotto, on the other side of the Gave. Each candle represents a prayer, a hope, a gratitude or a memory, and together they form a shining light of faith and devotion.
