In December, all over the world, there is a tradition of choosing a tree and putting it up in your home. It is then decorated with lights, baubles and other festive decorations. Today, about one in two homes in France is decorated with a Christmas tree.

Where did the Christian tradition of the Christmas tree originate?

The origins of the Christmas tree tradition are unclear, with several countries claiming to be the forerunners of this tradition. The tradition is said to have started in Latvia in 1510 but Estonia also claims to be the birthplace of the first Christmas tree.

According to other beliefs, the Christmas tree as we know it today originated in the 16th century in Alsace (at that time the French region as we know it was part of German territory). As the years and centuries passed, this tradition spread across countries and eventually became an international symbol of Christmas.

What is the symbolism of the Christmas tree?

The fir tree is a symbol of rebirth at the winter solstice, it is also a symbol of the renewal of life. The symbolism of the tree refers to the Garden of Eden, more precisely to the forbidden tree.

What does this have to do with the Bible?

In the Bible, the cross on which Jesus was crucified was associated with the tree of life in the Garden of Eden, representing eternal life and renewal.

Why do we decorate the tree?

It is customary to decorate Christmas trees at Christmas time, as they are empty and look like classic conifers, so in order to spread the magic of Christmas in the home, we prefer to add small elements to them. Decorating your tree also allows you to add religious and personal touches, and is also an activity appreciated by young and old alike, as it leaves room for creativity and imagination.

How to decorate a Christmas tree?

To decorate a Christmas tree, it is possible to use different types of decorations such as baubles, garlands, small characters to hang, candy canes or other sweets...

The choice of decorations and the choice of colours for the tree is completely free.

Why do we put a star on top of the Christmas tree?

You will have noticed that most Christmas trees have a star at the top. This star reminds us of the star of Bethlehem, the one that would have guided the Magi to the stable where the baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph were.

Why do we put baubles on the Christmas tree?

We are all used to decorating our Christmas trees with different elements such as garlands, baubles, etc. It seems that this tradition comes straight from our Christian religion.

Several centuries ago, decorations were reserved for the bourgeoisie and the aristocracy. The ornaments used were usually ribbons, small objects, or any other element that was hung on the branches of Christmas trees. As the tradition spread through the population and the decorations were too expensive for the people, the apple was chosen as the tree decoration. This fruit was in season, inexpensive and referred to the forbidden fruit of the Garden of Eden. As the temperature was very low afterwards, the trees were bare, so a glassblower had the idea of making red glass balls to remain faithful to tradition.

How long can I keep a Christmas tree?

A Christmas tree lasts at least 3 weeks, some last a little longer than others, depending on the climate and the variety of tree chosen.

When should you make your Christmas tree?

Some people choose to decorate their tree twelve days before Christmas. By doing this and choosing a natural tree, it will remain beautiful on Christmas Eve and during the Christmas party to welcome gifts. More and more Christmas decorations are put up before the beginning of December, whether in the street or in shops and homes. Everyone chooses the time they want to put up beautiful decorations in anticipation of Christmas.

What are the different types of Christmas trees?

There are several varieties of Christmas trees, the two best known of which are the Spruce and Nordmann. There are also synthetic, wooden and iron trees.

Spruce

The spruce is the most widespread and classic Christmas tree. Indeed, being robust, well stocked, with an attractive green colour and fine needles, it is the ideal Christmas tree for small budgets thanks to its affordable price. Nevertheless, it is known to lose its needles quite quickly.

Nordmann

This variety of fir is becoming increasingly popular and is appreciated for its conservation qualities, its resistance to the heat of a house and the beauty of its green and supple foliage. Compared to other varieties, this tree is more expensive.

Nobilis

The Nobilis is recognisable by its soft bluish needles and its characteristic scent. It has a long shelf life and is robust. Its branches are not always evenly distributed, which can sometimes make it difficult to hang decorations.

Omorika

The Omorika is a less common variety than the others, originating in the Balkans. It is slender and its needles have a slightly silvery sheen. It is an ideal outdoor tree as it thrives in all types of soil.

Pungens

With its pleasant scent and attractive bluish needles, it is also known as the blue fir. It is easy to replant in the garden if you decide to buy it in a pot.

Synthetic trees and other materials

If the idea of buying a new tree every year and having to keep it for a short time does not appeal to you, there are dozens of trees made of synthetic materials. Synthetic trees are quite common in the shops. White, snowy, green, glittery or even made of wood or iron, you will find something to suit all tastes.
