  • Proclamation of the Kingdom: Jesus came to proclaim the Kingdom of God and that all men were children of God.
  • Transfiguration: To reveal his divine nature, Jesus changed his physical appearance for a few moments during his earthly life.
  • Institution of the Eucharist: Jesus offered his apostles the Eucharist also known as the body of Christ.

These are the painful mysteries, as his name indicates. These mysteries are Christ's moments of pain:

  • The Agony of Jesus: The suffering of Jesus in the Garden of Olives after his denunciation by Judah and just before his arrest.
  • The scourging: After his arrest Christ was whipped and tortured by men.
  • The crown of thorns: The governor's soldiers placed a crown of thorns on Christ's head, mocking him.
  • The carrying of the cross: Also known as the ascent to Calvary. Jesus, who was condemned to death, had to carry his cross during the ascent to Golgotha.
  • Crucifixion: Jesus died on the cross and was crucified by men.
