She took her perpetual vows in 1878, a year before dying of tuberculosis on April 16, 1879, at the age of 35.

In 1925, Bernadette was beatified and later canonized in 1933 by Pope Pius XI, not for the apparitions, but for the exemplary nature of her life of faith. Her body, found miraculously intact during multiple exhumations, is displayed in Nevers.
