Biography of Saint Charbel
Youth and vocation
Charbel Makhlouf, born Youssef Antoun Makhlouf on 8 May 1828 in Bqaa Kafra, Lebanon, was a priest and hermit monk of the Maronite Church. He grew up in a pious family and felt a call to the monastic life at a very young age.
Monastic life
In 1851, at the age of 23, he joined the monastery of Our Lady of Mayfouk and then that of Saint-Maron in Annaya, where he became a monk under the name Charbel. He was ordained a priest in 1859 and led a life of prayer and seclusion.
Eremitical life
In 1875, he joined the hermitage of Saints Peter and Paul for a life of solitude and intense prayer. He remained there until his death in 1898, devoting his life to adoration, manual labour and praying the rosary.
Death and canonisation
Saint Charbel died on 24 December 1898. His body, found incorrupt, attracted many pilgrims. He was beatified in 1965 and canonised in 1977 by Pope Paul VI. He is the patron saint of Lebanon.

Many miracles are attributed to Saint Charbel, including healings that are medically inexplicable. The healing of Sister Marie-Abel Kamari and that of Iskandar Obeid are the most famous.

After his death, mysterious lights were observed around his tomb. His body remained incorruptible and exuded an oily substance with healing properties.
