His significance

St Nicholas is a Christian saint revered for his generosity and kindness to the poor and children. He is best known for giving gifts to needy children and thus became the legendary figure of Father Christmas. St Nicholas is also considered the patron saint of sailors, prisoners and travellers.

The religious rituals associated with this festival vary from region to region, but in general there is a special mass in honour of St Nicholas, followed by a procession through the streets of the town or village. During this procession, people carry pictures or statues of St Nicholas and sing hymns in his honour. In some regions, children receive gifts and sweets from St Nicholas or his assistants, who are often local folk characters.
