How to Live Holy Week in 2026 ?

Categories : Religious News Rss feed

Holy Week 2026 will take place from 29 March to 5 April 2026. It begins with Palm Sunday (29 March 2026) and ends in the light of Easter Sunday (5 April 2026).

This week is the centre of the entire Christian faith. It allows us to relive the last days of Christ: his entry into Jerusalem, the Last Supper, his Passion, his death and his Resurrection. Each day has a unique spiritual depth and deserves to be prepared with care.

Palm Sunday – 29 March 2026

Palm Sunday 2026 solemnly opens Holy Week. We commemorate Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The crowd acclaims him as a king, waving olive and palm branches and shouting, ‘Hosanna to the Son of David!’

But this joy already foreshadows the drama to come. The one who is acclaimed will soon be condemned. This contrast invites us to reflect: do we welcome Christ only in times of joy, or also in times of trial?

How can we fully experience this Sunday?

  • Have a palm branch blessed at Mass.
  • Read the Gospel of the Passion.
  • Set up a prayer corner at home.
  • Explain to children the meaning of Christ's humility.

To mark the beginning of this holy week, many choose to place a crucifix in their home, such as the Byzantine-style wooden crucifix with gilding, a true aid to meditation, or the gilded Christ the Redeemer crucifix (20 cm).

Holy Thursday – 2 April 2026

Holy Thursday 2026 marks the beginning of the Easter Triduum, the three holiest days of the year.

During the Last Supper, Jesus performed three founding acts:

  • He instituted the Eucharist: ‘This is my Body’.
  • He instituted the priesthood.
  • He washed the feet of his disciples, a sign of humility and service.

This day is an invitation to rediscover the Mass as an immense gift. It is also the day of the new commandment: ‘Love one another.’

How can we deepen our understanding of this mystery?

Meditative reading of the Gospel is essential. An appropriate Bible allows us to enter more deeply into the Word:

For families, the book Je prépare Pâques avec Théobule (I'm preparing for Easter with Théobule) helps children understand this seminal moment in a simple way.

Good Friday – 3 April 2026

Good Friday 2026 is the most moving day of Holy Week. The Church commemorates the Passion of Christ: his arrest, trial, flagellation, crucifixion, death and burial.

There is no Mass on this day. The altar is stripped bare. Silence reigns. The Church contemplates the mystery of love pushed to the point of total self-giving.

How can we live this day in a meaningful way?

  • Observe fasting and abstinence.
  • Meditate on the Way of the Cross.
  • Take a moment of silence at 3 p.m.
  • Read chapters 18 and 19 of the Gospel according to Saint John.

A crucifix placed in the centre of the home helps us to enter into contemplation of Christ's sacrifice. The Byzantine-style crucifix or the Easter Rosary made of aulite and hematite stones accompany silent prayer.

Holy Saturday – 4 April 2026

Holy Saturday 2026 is a day of great silence. Jesus lies in the tomb. The disciples are scattered. Hope seems extinguished.

Yet this silence is not empty. It is filled with expectation. The Church meditates on the mystery of Christ who descended into hell to free humanity.

In the evening, the Easter Vigil bursts forth in the light of the new fire. The Paschal candle is lit, symbolising the risen Christ.

The Alpha Omega Candle is a magnificent symbol of this light that conquers darkness.

Easter Sunday – 5 April 2026

Easter Sunday 2026 celebrates the Resurrection of Christ. Death is conquered. Life triumphs.

Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox. In 2026, this great feast falls on 5 April.

This day is an explosion of joy: songs, light, flowers, bells ringing again.

How can we prolong the joy of Easter?

  • Give a Bible as a gift.
  • Give a rosary as a gift.
  • Give a book of meditations as a gift.

The Lent Companion 2026 allows you to continue the meditation begun during Lent.

Prayer for Holy Week 2026

Lord Jesus Christ,

During this Holy Week 2026,

In the joy of Palm Sunday, teach us humility.
In the mystery of Holy Thursday, make us love the Eucharist.
In the pain of Good Friday, engrave your infinite love in us.
In the silence of Holy Saturday, strengthen our hope.
In the light of Easter, renew our faith.

Enter our homes,
bless our families,
and make us witnesses of your Resurrection.

Amen.
